Webb, Schilke to Lead Tennis Programs

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Houghton University Director of Athletics Matthew Webb has stepped into the role of Head Coach of the Highlanders' men's and women's tennis programs, the University announced today. Webb, who has served as Houghton's Director of Athletics since 2018, brings previous experience guiding the men's program as interim head coach during the 2017–18 and 2023–24 seasons.

Joining Webb on staff will be one of the most decorated players in program history, Micah Schilke '24, who has been named Associate Head Coach. Schilke, a two-sport athlete at Houghton in tennis and soccer, was a four-time All-Empire 8 First Team honoree, the 2022 Empire 8 Men's Tennis Player of the Year, and the 2023 Conference Tournament MVP. He graduated from Houghton with degrees in Communication, Sports Management, and Inclusive Childhood Education.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to lead our tennis programs and to continue to invest in the lives of our student-athletes," said Webb. "Tennis at Houghton has a strong tradition, and I am excited to see how we can build on that foundation. Having Micah alongside me is an incredible blessing. His passion for Houghton, his excellence as a player, and his ability to connect with others make him a tremendous fit for this role."

In addition to his standout playing career, Schilke gained extensive coaching experience as the lead tennis instructor at Silver Bay YMCA, where he developed and directed instructional programming for players of all ages while overseeing staff and court operations. He also served as a teaching pro at Midtown Athletic Club in Rochester and has volunteered his time coaching middle school and high school athletes.

He is currently a full-time teacher in the Wellsville School District.

"I don't think you will ever find someone as passionate about Houghton Tennis as I am," Schilke said. "This program shaped me as both a player and a person, and I am eager to give back by helping our student-athletes grow in their faith and their sport. Excellence for the Glory of God will continue to be at the heart of everything we do."

Former Highlander student-athlete and current graduate student Alexandria Leary will serve as an assistant during the campaign.
