OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Houghton earned a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Oswego on Saturday, rallying from an early deficit after doubles play to secure the Empire 8 win on the road.
In doubles, Houghton picked up a win at No. 2 as Preston Tobolski and Jason Murphy teamed up for a strong 6-3 victory. However, Oswego claimed the other two doubles matches to take the doubles point and a 1-0 lead into singles competition.
The Highlanders responded with an impressive showing in singles, winning four of six matches to clinch the match.
Rune Camps set the tone at No. 2 singles with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory, while Jonas Likens followed with a composed 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 4. Jason Murphy added another key point at No. 5 singles, earning a 6-4, 6-1 victory to keep Houghton in control.
The decisive point came at No. 6 singles, where Caleb Hilsher delivered a gritty comeback. After dropping the opening set, Hilsher battled back to win 1-6, 7-5, 10-7 in a match tiebreak to secure the team victory.
Despite losses at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, Houghton's depth proved to be the difference, as the Highlanders overcame the early doubles deficit with a strong and resilient singles performance.
