Our Houghton community was devastated on October 2, 1981 when a tragic accident claimed the lives of six young Houghton students.
 
Members of that year's Homecoming Court, the six were among the best and brightest from the class of 1982, admired for their campus leadership and their commitment to their faith in Jesus Christ.
 
The Eagles Statue at the center of campus is dedicated to the glory of God and in the loving memory of all six who were lost that day.
 
While the impact was felt across campus, three of those lost that day had also made a special impact as Highlander student-athletes:
 
Alan Robert Bushart - men's soccer
Joy Suzanne Ellis - women's volleyball
Cynthia Rae Rudes - women's volleyball
 
These three left an indelible mark on the Highlander programs and continue to be remembered with fondness on campus and among their former teammates and coaches.
 
This display -- dedicated on October 21, 2023 – is in honor of their leadership, sportsmanship and Christ-like character.
 
May all present and future Highlander athletes be inspired by their example and pursue excellence to the glory of God as they did.
