The Houghton University Men's Tennis team enters the 2026 season with a sense of optimism and purpose under the leadership of head coach Matthew Webb and associate head coach Micah Schilke. With a blend of experienced returners and impactful newcomers, the Highlanders are focused on building upon a strong foundation while continuing to pursue the standards that have defined the program in recent years.
Webb describes the team's mindset as both optimistic and energized heading into the spring. "We're optimistic and excited for a new season with some new faces, but with similar goals that our men's team has been accustomed to," he said.
A key emphasis throughout the offseason has been growth in consistency and adaptability. "We've really focused on developing consistency in our play," Webb noted. "We've also worked hard at assessing our opponents and being able to make necessary adjustments during matches."
While results are always a factor, Webb has centered this year's goals on development and daily improvement. "We're looking to improve individually and build upon a competitive team culture," he said. "End results are nice to focus on, but our goals are about the process and maximizing our potential."
That culture will be anchored by a strong junior class. Preston Tobolski, Jonas Likens, Benjamin Unger, and Jason Murphy are all expected to play pivotal roles this season. Beyond their contributions in the lineup, the quartet will serve as leaders, helping guide the team both on and off the court.
Houghton's lineup will also benefit from a talented group of newcomers who have already made a strong impression. Rune Camps and Eben Schilke have positioned themselves as immediate contributors and are expected to compete near the top of the lineup. Luke Maliszewski has also emerged as a strong contender for a lineup spot, adding depth and competition across the roster. "All three of our newcomers are very welcome additions to the program," Webb added.
As the season unfolds, consistency from top to bottom will define the Highlanders' identity. "This team is going to be tough to beat—that's our identity," Webb said. "We want consistency from the top to the bottom of the lineup."
What excites Webb most, however, goes beyond wins and losses. He points to the character and commitment of this group, highlighting the opportunity for veteran leadership to shape the development of younger players. "This is a group of phenomenal young men," Webb said. "I'm excited to see how the growth and maturity of the older guys impacts the younger guys. They're committed, driven, and really looking forward to this spring competition."
With a strong mix of leadership, emerging talent, and a clear vision for growth, Houghton men's tennis is poised to build momentum and compete at a high level throughout the 2026 campaign.
