Men's Tennis Drops Home Opener to Daemen

Box Score The Houghton College Men's Tennis Team dropped their home opener Wednesday afternoon to Division II competitor Daemen College 7-2. Leading the way for the Highlanders was Senior Matthew Cicero. Cicero picked up two wins on the day, overcoming his opponent at fifth singles 6-1 6-4 and pairing up with Freshman Nolan Zach for a 8-4 third doubles victory. At first doubles, Micah Schilke and Levi Webb fell 8-2, and at the second pairing, Jaimie Staerkle and Isaac Little had a hard fought 8-6 defeat.

"The men found themselves in a tough match against a very talented opponent," Head Coach Zach Shilvock stated after the match. "This is a great learning experience for our team. We need to be better at winning the key points in both singles and doubles play. The best way to practice pressure points is to place yourself in those pressure situations against quality opponents. The men will improve at this over the course of the season, I have no doubt."

The Highlanders will head back to the practice court, and will look to rebound against Allegheny College this coming Saturday at noon.
