Houghton College Men's Tennis was downed 9-0 against non-conference rival RIT Tuesday afternoon at the Gordon Field House in Rochester. The Highlanders could not get anything going for them in the early going as they dropped all 3 doubles points to start the match. In singles,
Micah Schilke and
Jaimie Staerkle would ignite the Highlanders with some solid play, but both fell with 6-4, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-3 scores at the first and second single positions respectively.
Matt Cicero would also battle with a competitive match at the third flight, but eventually fell short 6-1, 6-3.
"The men did not come prepared to play today," Head Coach
Zach Shilvock said after the match. "When you take on opponents that are more talented than you, the focus and energy must be unmatched. It was not, and as a result the scores were not competitive. Our men will keep trusting in the process we have for growth, and will learn from this setback."
The Highlanders, who drop to 2-6 on the season, will look to end their five game losing skid on Friday as they take on Grove City in the Kerr-Pegula Field House at 4pm.
