Houghton Moves to 6-0 in Conference Play After Win Against Fisher

Box Score

Houghton College Men's Tennis team capped off a great weekend with a 9-0 victory over St. John Fisher College Saturday afternoon. Houghton beat Fisher earlier this season 6-3, but it was a closely contested match. In this second matchup at home, the Highlanders were relentless with their play from start to finish.

In doubles action, Houghton jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with Micah Schilke and Jake Fisler prevailing at the first spot 8-6, Ethan Yung and Levi Webb winning 8-3, and Adam Brown and Ben McKay setting the tone with a decisive 8-1 decision for Houghton's first point. The Highlanders would not let the momentum drop as the match transitioned into singles play. Matt Cicero would kick off singles with a decisive 6-2,6-1 win at fourth singles against long-time conference rival O'Connell who had bested him in their last two meetings. Ethan Yung and Jake Fisler would shortly follow with 6-2, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-0 victories at first and second singles respectively. To close out the sweep, Micah Schilke took court three 6-2, 7-5, Adam Brown would win 6-4, 6-1 at sixth, and Levi Webb came back at the fifth position to win 4-6, 6-3, 10-3 in a third set super tiebreaker.

"The guys really came out to play today. We had a tight match with Fisher last time, closer than the score would indicate, so our team came out with a desire to prove themselves today. To take down a scrappy team like Fisher across the board is a huge accomplishment and a really awesome reward for what has been an excellent week of practice and prep for this match. I couldn't be prouder of the guys for what they accomplished on court today," said Head Coach Tonya McGraner after the match.

Houghton hope to finish the regular season undefeated in conference play as they take on Alfred University on Wednesday and Nazareth College on Saturday next week.
