The Houghton College Men's Tennis team picked up their first win of their season with a thrilling 5-4 victory against SUNY Oswego. The Highlanders only have one match in their non-traditional fall season, and ended it on a high note Monday evening.
In doubles action, the Highlanders would grab a quick 2-1 lead, with Matt Cicero and Nolan Zach winning at first doubles 8-3 and Isaac Little and Adam Brown coming back from 1-6 down to secure the second doubles point 8-6. In the process, Nolan Zach would pick up his first ever college tennis victory. The Oswego Lakers would not back down from a fight however.
With only four playable courts at Oswego's facility, the first four singles got underway with Houghton needing three victories to clinch the match. The Lakers would battle back though taking wins at first, third, and fourth singles. Isaac Little would bring some momentum coming back from behind to win 4-6, 6-0, 11-9 at the second flight. The fifth and sixth singles players of Micah Christensen and Noah Harley would both have to win for a Houghton victory. Micah Christensen, a senior playing his last ever match due to graduating early, would battle back from behind to win 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 10-5. Ending just seconds behind him was freshman Noah Harley who picked up his first ever collegiate victory in a match clinching scenario, pulling it out 6-0, 6-7 (6-8), 10-4.
"What an incredible match this was to start the year," Head Coach Zach Shilvock said after the lengthy contest. "I am so proud of Micah Christensen in particular for coming back and ending his amazing career on such a high note. We have a lot to work on heading into the Spring, but this contest was great experience for our younger guys to get a taste of what competitive college tennis feels like. This team showed a lot of grit today and that makes me excited for the future of Houghton Tennis!"
The Highlanders will enjoy their lone fall victory and will look to continue their winning ways in the Spring.
