Weekly Update 
Today we take a look at how the teams faired in last week's competition and preview upcoming contests for the Highlanders.

BASEBALL (8-7, 2-1 E8)
 
Last Week:
Monday – Won vs. Utica, 13-9
Wednesday – Lost vs. Brockport, 9-4
             
With the first conference series of the year on the line, the Highlanders offense kicked into gear, knocking out 15 hits to defeat the Utica Pioneers in the rubbermatch, 13-9.
 
Two days later, the bats cooled off as Brockport limited the team to only two hits, but the Highlanders continued to find productive ways to put runs on the board. The game remained tied, 4-4, entering the seventh inning before the Golden Eagles pulled away late.
 
David Wessells raised his batting average to .365 with four hits against Utica—including two ground-ruled doubles and a triple—and another against Brockport.  He also swiped three bases against the Golden Eagles and currently leads the Empire 8 with 11 stolen bases.
 
The Highlanders continue to lead the Empire 8 in team batting average (.330) and on base percentage (.420), and rank second in slugging (.451).
 
Tage Johnson currently leads the conference in slugging (.766) and ranks second in on base percentage (.548) and third in batting average (.426). 
 
Ben Closson ranks fourth in batting average (.423) and on base percentage (.509), and stands sixth in slugging (.577).

WOMEN'S LACROSSE (4-3, 2-0 E8)
 
Last Week:
Wednesday – Won vs. Elmira, 14-10
 
Houghton women's lacrosse won their fourth straight game to improve to 4-3 on the season and 2-0 in E8 play with a 10-4 win over Elmira College on Wednesday.

After Elmira found the net first to take an early lead, Houghton responded with five unanswered goals and out-scored the Soaring Eagles 5-3 for the rest of the half, taking a 10-4 lead into the break.  

In the second half Houghton withstood a short-lived Elmira comeback, holding on for the win. 

Houghton outshot Elmira 35-21 and had a 16-15 edge in groundballs

Alyssa Strom, Meagan Barry, and Elizabeth Piszker each scored three goals apiece, while Cori Beck and Marissa Hews each added two goals, and Brooke Turner picked up the final tally.

Sarah Olandt collected six saves in the net for the Highlanders.

SOFTBALL (7-9, 0-0 E8)
 
Last Week:

After playing only two games in 25 days the Highlanders finally received a break in the weather long enough to pick up three wins in four games.
 
Kaylee Jentsch picked up a pair of pitching wins, tossing 13 scoreless innings to improve to 4-1 on the season.  Jentsch allowed only 10 hits and struck out seven.
 
Tanya Hatton earned her third win of the season on Thursday, pitching all eight innings in the Highlanders victory over Medaille. Hatton allowed only three runs in 13 innings on the week while not allowing a single walk, receiving a hard-luck, 2-0, loss to Keuka.  She currently ranks third in the Empire 8 with a 2.17 ERA.
 
Taylor Sile went 5-for-10 on the week with two doubles and four RBI, raising her team-leading slash line to .465/.589/.860.
 
Mariah Rogers picked up four hits in 11 at bats, including two doubles and five RBI.  Her two-RBI double down the leftfield line in the top of the eighth inning sealed the second victory of the week for the Highlanders.
 
McKenzie Marti also posted five hits on the week for the Highlanders, including a three-hit performance against Medaille in the week's finale.

Houghton men's tennis improved to 3-3 on the season, collecting their third straight victory in a 9-0 win over SUNY Oswego on Monday in the Kerr-Pegula Field House.

The Keuka Wolves came out of the gates quickly, scoring the game's first six goals in route to a 21-8 defeat of the Houghton Highlanders.
 
Keuka maintained a 38-24 advantage in shots.

Cole Chapman and Jonathan Mayer led the Highlanders with five goals each, while Nathan Anderson and Quinn Hull each chipped in with a goal apiece.
 
Chapman currently ranks fourth in the Empire 8 in goals per game (2.57) and sixth in points per game (3.29).
 
Anderson ranks second in the conference in assists per game (2.29) and points per game (4.14).
