Belanger Achieves First Team All-American Finish at NCAA Championships

GENEVA, OH -- Alexa Belanger traveled to the SPIRE Insitute Track & Field Complex on Friday to compete in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the High Jump. Her jump of 1.71m at the Empire 8 Championships helped her qualify and be seeded 6th in the event going into the NCAA Championships. Belanger got off to a hot start in the competition by clearing the first two heights of 1.60m and 1.65m on her first attempt. At the following height of 1.68m, Belanger barely grazed the bar on her 3rd attempt, and was eliminated from the competition. However, her performance tied her for 8th place and the last spot on the podium to achieve 1st Team All-America status. At the NCAA Indoor Championships, Belanger finished 9th, just one spot off the podium.

Director of the Cross Country/Track & Field programs Patrick Hager commented after the meet, "Alexa is someone who really brings her 'A Game' to meets, and especially championships. I know she had a bit of a chip on her shoulder after the indoor championsips and finishing 9th (one spot off the podium). We are proud that she came here and got a taste of what it's like to stand up there with the best in the country. She really needs to be commended her the entirety of her freshman track & field season. She set multiple program records, Empire 8 Championships, a regional title, etc. I also think she just had a lot of fun seeing some big improvements. A lot of that came from Coach B and Coach Brennan really helping her see progress, as an athlete, in speed, strength, and technique."

This brings the conclusion of the Highlanders outdoor track & field season.
