Houghton to Induct 2026 Athletics Hall of Honor Class on May 2

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton University Athletics will welcome three distinguished former student-athletes into its Athletics Hall of Honor as the Class of 2026 on Saturday, May 2, during a special luncheon on campus.

This year's class includes Kirsten (Nelson) Maples '05, Joe Mason '07, and Danielle (Brenon) Groff '12—three individuals whose accomplishments, character, and lasting impact exemplify the mission and tradition of Highlander athletics.

Founded in 1994, the Houghton University Athletics Hall of Honor was established "to help preserve, strengthen, and add distinction to the athletic program at Houghton University." Inductees are selected not only for their athletic achievements, but also for their demonstration of discipline, sacrifice, leadership, and Christian character both during and after their time at Houghton.

Joe Mason is one of the most accomplished throwers in program history, holding multiple school records in both indoor and outdoor track and field events. Kirsten Maples stands among the top volleyball players in Houghton history and was also a member of the women's basketball program, earning conference recognition and leaving a lasting mark on the record books. Danielle Groff is one of the most decorated distance runners in program history, a national champion and multiple All-American whose success continued into a professional running career.

Each inductee has carried the lessons of Houghton Athletics into their professional and personal lives, demonstrating leadership, service, and excellence in their respective fields.

The Hall of Honor induction luncheon will celebrate their achievements and formally recognize their place among the outstanding men and women who have shaped the legacy of Houghton Athletics. Each honoree will also be commemorated with a plaque displayed in the foyer of the Nielsen Center.

About the Hall of Honor
Established in 1994 the Athletic Hall of Honor is charged "To help preserve, strengthen and add distinction to the athletic program at Houghton University." The 'Highlanders' Hall of Honor recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the program, through participation, support or interest. Induction into the Hall takes into account the lives of those honored, acknowledging evidence of discipline, sacrifice, steadfastness, cooperation, commitment and Christian witness. The Hall honors the men and women who have demonstrated—both on campus and in succeeding years—the worth of athletics by their mature leadership and their impact on society. Additionally, inductees may have exemplified courage and tenacity having applied the disciplines learned in athletics to significant life challenges or championed a significant cause that has benefited others. A plaque commemorating each member hangs in the foyer of the Nielsen Center.
