HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton University Athletics proudly inducted Joe Mason '07, Kirsten (Nelson) Maples '05, and Danielle (Brenon) Groff '12 into the Houghton Athletics Hall of Honor as the Class of 2026 during a special luncheon held on Saturday, May 2.

The event brought together friends, family members, and representatives from the Houghton Athletics Department and the University community to celebrate the remarkable accomplishments and lasting legacies of this year's honorees. The afternoon was marked by reflection, gratitude, and recognition of three individuals whose impact continues to be felt both on and off the field of competition.

The honorees of this induction class join a Hall roster that now totals 74 alumni, coaches, teams and contributors.

Joe Mason '07

Track and Field

A standout in the throwing events, Joe Mason's journey to Houghton excellence began with a willingness to embrace something new. After discovering shot put and discus in high school, Mason quickly rose through the ranks and continued his success collegiately.

Following two successful seasons at Alfred State, including appearances at national championship meets, Mason transferred to Houghton and immediately left his mark. He broke multiple school records in his first meets as a Highlander and went on to set program standards in the outdoor discus, hammer, and shot put, as well as the indoor shot put and weight throw—records that still stand today.

Known for his humility and steady leadership, Mason represented Houghton with integrity and respect. Today, he serves as a principal in Chesapeake, Virginia, after a distinguished career in education that includes recognition as Teacher of the Year and leadership roles within his school community. He also remains active in ministry, serving as a deacon and helping lead an outreach-focused organization.

Kirsten (Nelson) Maples '05

Women's Volleyball and Basketball

Kirsten Maples was a dynamic and versatile athlete whose contributions to Houghton Athletics spanned both volleyball and basketball. As one of the most accomplished volleyball players in program history, she remains prominently featured in the Houghton record book across multiple statistical categories.

A two-time conference Player of the Year, Maples was instrumental in the success of the Highlander volleyball program, combining athletic excellence with a team-first mentality. She also competed for the women's basketball team, showcasing her competitive drive and versatility.

Maples is remembered not only for her performance, but for the culture she helped build—one centered on encouragement, faith, and strong relationships. Following her time at Houghton, she went on to teach overseas, coach volleyball, work as a personal trainer, and later become a licensed acupuncturist.

She now lives just south of Seattle, Washington, where she works as an acupuncturist while homeschooling her two sons and remaining connected to the Houghton community through friendships and visits.

Danielle (Brenon) Groff '12

Cross Country / Track and Field

One of the most decorated distance runners in Houghton history, Danielle Groff's career was defined by determination, growth, and championship-level success.

Groff developed into a multiple All-American and national champion during her time at Houghton, highlighted by her victory at the National Marathon Championship her senior year. She also claimed national titles in the 5K and 10K at the National Christian College Championships and delivered standout performances in cross country. Her achievements remain etched in the program's record books.

Her journey was marked by resilience, as she overcame setbacks and challenges to become a mentally tough and confident competitor. Following graduation, Groff competed professionally with Hansons-Brooks Distance Project and continued her involvement in elite-level competition.

Today, she serves as a personal running coach, helping athletes of all levels pursue their goals, while also working as a Global Team Leader in Learning Technology. She resides in Fairport, New York, with her husband and two daughters.

The 2026 Hall of Honor induction ceremony served as a celebration of excellence, perseverance, and faith—hallmarks of Houghton University Athletics. Joe Mason, Kirsten Maples, and Danielle Groff each leave a legacy that extends far beyond records and accolades, impacting teammates, students, and communities for years to come.

About the Hall of Honor
Established in 1994 the Athletic Hall of Honor is charged "To help preserve, strengthen and add distinction to the athletic program at Houghton University." The 'Highlanders' Hall of Honor recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the program, through participation, support or interest. Induction into the Hall takes into account the lives of those honored, acknowledging evidence of discipline, sacrifice, steadfastness, cooperation, commitment and Christian witness. The Hall honors the men and women who have demonstrated—both on campus and in succeeding years—the worth of athletics by their mature leadership and their impact on society. Additionally, inductees may have exemplified courage and tenacity having applied the disciplines learned in athletics to significant life challenges or championed a significant cause that has benefited others. A plaque commemorating each member hangs in the foyer of the Nielsen Center.
