HOUGHTON, N.Y. — Houghton University Athletics has been named the 2026 National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) #KingChasing Institution of the Year, recognizing the department's continued commitment to integrating faith and purpose into the collegiate athletic experience.
The #KingChasing initiative—rooted in the Game Plan 4 LIFE values of Love, Integrity, Faith, and Excellence—seeks to redefine the purpose of college athletics beyond competition and championships. Centered on the mission of keeping Christ at the heart of the student-athlete experience, the program challenges NCCAA institutions to intentionally pursue spiritual impact, character formation, and holistic development within their athletic departments.
The award is presented annually by the National Christian College Athletic Association to the institution that demonstrates exceptional engagement in the #KingChasing framework. Institutions earn points through participation in initiatives aligned with the four core values, with a benchmark of 105 points required to be named a #KingChasing Institution. The highest point earners are then considered finalists for Institution of the Year honors. The Institution of the Year receives $10,000 for institutional scholarships and $2,000 to fund sports ministry initiatives.
Houghton's selection as the 2026 recipient continues a strong multi-year trajectory within the program. The Highlanders previously earned the inaugural Institution of the Year honor in 2022 and were again recognized as a finalist in 2025, reflecting sustained commitment to the initiative's mission and values.
"Being named the #KingChasing Institution of the Year is a reflection of the heart of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff," said Houghton Director of Athletics Matthew Webb. "Our goal has always been to ensure that Christ remains central to everything we do, and this recognition affirms that ongoing commitment."
The
#KingChasing program is built around the four pillars of the Game Plan 4 LIFE—Love, Integrity, Faith, and Excellence—which guide NCCAA institutions in shaping athletic environments that prioritize spiritual growth and servant leadership.
The #KingChasing initiative itself continues to serve as a national platform encouraging programs to pursue a higher purpose in athletics, emphasizing that success is measured not only in wins and losses, but in lives impacted for Christ.
