The Houghton University Baseball team enters the 2026 season with a heightened sense of focus and unity under the leadership of head coach Brian Reitnour. Building on the foundation of recent success, the Highlanders are driven by both unfinished business and a clear sense of purpose as they prepare for the spring.
Reitnour believes this group brings a unique level of readiness into the season. "We may very well be more focused, confident, prepared, and unified than we have ever been," he said.
That mindset has been shaped in part by lessons learned from last year. "A team that keeps the most important thing the most important thing is incredibly hard to beat," Reitnour explained. "It also places the burdens of life in the right place—at the foot of the cross." He also emphasized the importance of consistency in approach. "We need to stay focused throughout. We cannot take games off, plays off, or pitches off. If we lose our focus, we will lose games that we should not lose." The memory of last season's finish continues to motivate the group. "We still feel the sting of the way last season ended," he added. "We will do everything we can not to allow external circumstances to impact our outcomes the way they did last year."
For Reitnour, the program's goals remain rooted in both performance and purpose. "Our goal is to win baseball games," he said. "But our purpose is to build men who are built for God and for others. We want to keep the standard the standard."
That standard has been reinforced through a strong offseason. "Our collective focus and determination are better," Reitnour noted. "Truthfully, just about every aspect of the X's and O's of our game has improved, but without better focus it wouldn't mean much. This team could be special."
The Highlanders return a deep and accomplished core of players who will lead the way this season. Christian Tortorici and Qingyang Feng, both all-region performers a year ago, headline the group, while Nate Hall, Nate Tyler, and Aiden Talcott bring all-conference experience. Vincent Lucyszyn anchors the infield, with Christopher Gross, Conner Benitez, and Mark Lewandowski also expected to play significant roles.
New additions are already making their presence felt. JD Robinson, a graduate transfer, is expected to have an immediate impact. "JD is tough as nails and will play a prominent role in our infield and in our lineup," Reitnour said. "He has already contributed significantly to the overall demeanor of the team." Freshmen Danny Bratton and Tobias Waldridge also bring versatility as two-way players capable of contributing right away.
Houghton's identity will remain consistent with the standard the program has established. "We set the standard, and our style of play remains unchanged," Reitnour said. "We play hard on every pitch, start to finish. We play a high-pressure style of baseball and want to enter each competition with a wide array of tools in our tool belt."
With a veteran core, impactful newcomers, and a renewed commitment to focus and purpose, the Highlanders are poised to compete at a high level throughout the 2026 season.
