Fillmore, Houghton Partnership Nets Improved Tennis Courts

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – A relationship that spans decades has resulted in recent upgrades to the Houghton College outdoor tennis courts.

Fillmore Central School donated the funds for the college to re-surface and re-paint the courts over the summer, and administrators from both institutions gathered with community members and student-athletes to recognize the partnership at a ribbon cutting ceremony in September.

"This most recent renovation of the tennis courts is largely due to Fillmore's financial generosity," said Houghton Director of Athletics Matthew Webb. "I want to thank Superintendent Mike Dodge, Athletic Director Jon Beardsley, and tennis coaches Bill Nolan and Randy Crouch for their collaborative spirit in helping to make the daily schedules work for using the courts. I can't help but think that this collaborative spirit is not the norm in many communities, and we are blessed to have this relationship with Fillmore Central School."

Dodge and Houghton President Shirley Mullen each shared a few words before they joined Webb to cut the ribbon. Tennis coaches and student-athletes from Houghton and Fillmore were also present for the ceremony.

For years Houghton and Fillmore have mutually benefited from sharing each other's athletic facilities. Houghton soccer, basketball, softball, and baseball have all used Fillmore's facilities at various times over the years.  Fillmore regularly uses the college tennis and track facilities as well as occasionally uses the college baseball and softball facilities.

In addition to the new playing surface, a new sign was erected near the courts in honor of the partnership.
