The Houghton University women's tennis team hosted Cortland at the Kerr-Pegula Field House on Saturday, September 5, falling 7-0 in non-conference action.
Despite the overall team score, Houghton battled closely across several spots, led by multi-set efforts in the top singles matches. At No. 1 singles,
Sage Brinckerhoff forced a third-set tiebreaker after taking the second set, ultimately falling 5-7, 6-2, 7-10 to Cortland's Christina Massoni.
Victoria Martinez also pushed her match to three sets at No. 2 singles, rebounding with a strong second set before dropping a 0-6, 6-3, 3-6 decision to Gabriella Stanley.
Zoe Zachery delivered a competitive effort at No. 3 singles, playing tight games in a 4-6, 4-6 loss to Reaghan Hughes.
In doubles play, Brinckerhoff and Martinez picked up three games at the No. 1 spot in a 3-6 setback. The No. 3 pairing of
Prashansa Chakrapani and
Jessica Fornah also fought for three games before dropping their match 3-6.
