ALBANY, N.Y. —
Hope Russell scored in the second minute of action to lead Houghton University to a 1-0 victory over Russell Sage College on Saturday at the ACPHS Athletic Complex.
The victory marks the fifth straight win for the Highlanders, who improved to 5-2-0 overall and 3-0-0 in Empire 8 Conference play. Russell Sage fell to 5-2-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the conference.
Russell found the back of the net at the 1:42 mark, giving Houghton an early advantage that would hold up for the remainder of the contest. The early strike proved to be the decisive tally in a defensive battle.

Olivia Short turned away all three shots on goal she faced over 90 minutes to secure the clean sheet. Russell Sage goalkeeper Hailey Blake recorded six saves in the loss.
The Highlanders outshot the Gators 15-10 overall, including a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. Houghton also held a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.
Houghton returns home to Burke Field on Tuesday, Sept. 22, to host Buffalo State in a non-conference matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
