HOUGHTON, N.Y. — Houghton University battled Alfred University to a 2-2 draw Wednesday night in an Empire 8 Conference matchup at Burke Field. The Highlanders moved to 2-2-2 overall and 0-1-1 in Empire 8 play.
Houghton took the lead in the 19th minute when
Nata Souza scored at 18:23 to put the Highlanders ahead 1-0. Houghton continued to generate chances throughout the opening half, outshooting Alfred 7-3 and forcing five saves from Alfred goalkeeper Tyler Mulholland.
Alfred equalized in the 63rd minute on a penalty kick by Derek Alexei Rodriguez. Houghton quickly answered, with
James Fay scoring at 66:04 off an assist from Souza to restore the Highlanders' lead at 2-1.
Rodriguez found the net again in the 83rd minute to bring Alfred level at 2-2. Houghton continued to look for the go-ahead goal late, earning a corner kick and putting another shot on goal, but Alfred goalkeeper Mulholland made the save to preserve the draw.
Houghton finished with an 11-6 advantage in shots and put nine shots on target.
Souza led the Highlanders with a goal, an assist and one shot on goal, while Fay added a goal.
Joshua Smith made one save in goal for Houghton.
