Women's Soccer Opens Conference Play with Win over Hartwick

HOUGHTON, N.Y. — Houghton University opened Empire 8 Conference play with a 2-1 victory over Hartwick College Saturday at Burke Field, extending the Highlanders' winning streak to three matches. Houghton improved to 3-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in Empire 8 play, while Hartwick fell to 0-3-1 overall and 0-1-0 in conference competition.

Houghton took control in the final 10 minutes of the first half, scoring twice to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. Samara Hallett opened the scoring in the 37th minute, finishing off an assist from Leah Jackson. Emma Kamas doubled the advantage with 11 seconds remaining before halftime on a pass from Elizabeth Wertz.

Hartwick cut the deficit in half early in the second period when Calleigh Byron scored in the 51st minute off an assist from Lily Dempsey. The Highlanders' defense held the lead from there, with goalkeeper Olivia Short making two saves in the second half to preserve the victory.

Houghton generated an 11-6 advantage in shots and a 9-3 edge in corner kicks. Short finished with two saves in the victory.

Houghton continues Empire 8 play Wednesday, Sept. 16, traveling to Alfred University for a 6 p.m. conference matchup.
