Growth, Unity, Energy are Key for 2026 Softball

The Houghton University Softball team enters the 2026 season with a renewed focus on growth, unity, and energy under the direction of head coach Olivia Kincanon. With a mix of experienced leaders and promising newcomers, the Highlanders are building a culture centered on development both on and off the field.

Kincanon emphasized a strong team-oriented mindset heading into the season. "Our mindset for this season is a team-first culture and a growth mindset," she said. "They are all working hard and playing for each other, building that trust that it takes to be successful." She noted that the team has made a conscious effort to strengthen relationships, which she believes will translate directly into performance on the field. "The expectation is to continue growing every day and every season, and these girls are bought into that."

That emphasis on culture is a direct continuation from last season. "Last year, we really focused on building the culture of this team, and we have carried those same values into this preseason," Kincanon said. "Success doesn't just come from having talented players—it comes from within the team."

For Kincanon, success in 2026 will be defined by overall development. "The primary goal for our program this year is to improve from the year prior," she explained. "If we can say we have improved physically, mentally, and spiritually, that is my definition of success within this program."

On the field, the Highlanders have already shown signs of growth—particularly offensively. "I think offensively we are stronger this year," Kincanon said. "We've added players who will contribute speed on the base paths and to our small ball game. We're looking to be aggressive and jump on teams early, and I believe this team will be able to do that."

Veteran leadership will play a key role in guiding that approach. Senior Dani Nelson is expected to be a major contributor on both sides of the ball. "Dani will be a big key for us with her bat and her defense on the right side," Kincanon said. "She covers a lot of ground and makes big plays for us." In the circle, senior Kareena Ulfig brings valuable experience. "Kareena will play a big role in our pitching production. As a veteran, she knows how to handle pressure situations and stay calm to throw a good game."

The Highlanders will also benefit from an exciting group of newcomers. Ella Christ has already made an impression after transitioning to the outfield. "We've seen her settle in more and more, and her quick bat speed will help her adjust to collegiate pitching," Kincanon noted. Phoebe Ruth is another newcomer to watch. "With her speed and ability to slap from the left side, she's someone who can really help us offensively."

As the season unfolds, Kincanon hopes her team will be defined by its energy and joy for the game. "We're working to instill playing with high energy and having fun," she said. "This game can be unforgiving at times, but if you bring energy and focus on enjoying it, it makes it more rewarding. What you learn from the game and each other is what will shape you as a person."

That perspective is part of what makes this year's group special in Kincanon's eyes. "This is such an enjoyable group to be around," she said. "They make it fun, but they also want to see their teammates grow every day. They're helping and correcting each other and truly being students of the game. It brings me a lot of joy to see them working together to make this program better each season."

With a strong cultural foundation, emerging offensive strength, and a commitment to growth, Houghton softball is poised to take meaningful steps forward throughout the 2026 campaign.
