The Houghton University men's tennis team opened its spring season with a convincing 6–1 victory over SUNY Delhi on Thursday afternoon at the Clark Field House. The Highlanders swept doubles play and won five of six singles matches to secure the match win.
Houghton set the tone early by claiming all three doubles contests. The first doubles pairing of Rune Camps and Jonas Likens earned a 6–4 victory, while Benjamin Unger and Eben Schilke dominated at second doubles with a 6–2 win. The Highlanders completed the sweep at third doubles as Isaac Anderson and James Adenuga edged their opponents 7–5 to give Houghton a 3–0 advantage heading into singles play.
In singles, Camps continued his strong day with a decisive 6–2, 6–1 win at the top spot. Schilke followed with a 6–3, 6–2 victory at No. 2 singles, and Unger was equally impressive at No. 4 singles, taking a 6–2, 6–1 decision. Caleb Hilsher added another point with a commanding 6–0, 6–1 win at fifth singles, while James Adenuga closed out the match with an 8–1 victory at No. 6.
SUNY Delhi's lone point came at third singles, where Devin Guerrieri outlasted Likens in a tight three-set battle, 6–2, 4–6, 10–8.
With the win, the Highlanders move to 1–1 on the season.
Houghton will travel to take on Vermont State University-Johnson in a conference match on Friday at 4 p.m.
