PORTERSVILLE, Pa. — Houghton University disc golf sent three teams to compete at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships on Saturday and Sunday, with the FC1 team earning a second-place finish.
Houghton's MC1 team shot 6 under par to tie for sixth place, while MC3 finished ninth at 17 over par. The FC1 team placed second at 11 over par, earning its best finish to date.
The tournament featured two rounds of team play and one round of singles competition. The opening team round took place at Slippery Rock University, while the singles round and final team round were held at the heavily wooded Moraine State Park course.
In singles play, Zach Sisson led MC1 with a round of 3 under par, tying for fourth place. Reid Cockle and Kyle Burrichter tied for 22nd, while Peter Stickney tied for 27th.
André Spronk led MC3, tying for 10th place and recording the highest-rated round of his career with a rating of 905.
For FC1, Emily Schweigart finished sixth and Carolyn Powers placed eighth.
"Overall, I am very happy with our teams," head coach Ben Campbell said. "While we were disappointed with our result in MC1, the guys never gave up, despite the difficult course and a very windy round with tree limbs falling all around us on the course."
Campbell also praised Burrichter, who competed in his first collegiate event, for handling the pressure and contributing to the team.
He highlighted the leadership of MC3 seniors Spronk and Wes Anderson, noting their contributions both on the course and in welcoming and supporting newer team members. Campbell also praised Spronk's continued improvement throughout his time with the program.
Campbell credited the FC1 team's second-place finish to the partnership between Schweigart and Powers, whose complementary strengths and mutual support helped them navigate the physical and mental challenges of competition.
"Finishing second is their best-ever finish; it's just a result of all of the time they spend practicing and playing together," Campbell said.
The Highlanders will conclude their fall season Nov. 7 at the New England Regional Championship in Leicester, Massachusetts.
