Strong Putting Leads to Third Place Finish for Disc Golf

CHITTENANGO, N.Y. – Houghton disc golf finished in third place, losing by two strokes to Redeemer University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute at the Northeast Conference Tournament.

The men's team was comprised of Peter Stickney, Reid Cockle, Ryan Lorenc, and Ryan Zirilli.

Strong singles performances from Stickney, tie-second and Lorenc, tie-fifth, kept Houghton in contention after round one.

In team play, dominant putting carried the Highlanders to a two-stroke deficit with four holes to play.

Unfortunately, the putting fizzled out, missing three putts for birdie in the last four holes.

On the women's side, Carolyn Powers was the only competitor for Houghton, finishing in third place during singles play.

"I am extremely happy overall with how we played," said Head Coach Ben Campbell. "We essentially played the course blind-- something we try to never do-- and two of our team members had never played in a tournament before. Despite the final few holes, we can hold our heads up high with our composure, positive attitude, and consistent putting."

Competing in this conference tournament made Houghton eligible for the four day "College Disc Golf National Championship" tournament in Rock Hill, S.C., on April 1-4.

The Highlanders will conclude their fall season with the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship in Steamburg, N.Y. on October 18-19.
