STEAMBURG, N.Y. – Each of Houghton's three disc golf teams earned third place finishes in their respective brackets at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships at the Highbanks Disc Golf Park.
The men's MC1 team was comprised of
Peter Stickney,
Reid Cockle, Ryan Lorenc, and
Zach Sisson.
A course and tournament record breaking singles performance from
Zach Sisson, finishing in second place after a final 9 round, and a solid round from
Rhyan Lorenc (T-14th), put Houghton in a tie for second place after round 1.
In team play, consistent putting and driving carried the Highlanders to a tie for third place. With only three D1 bids for grabs, Houghton went into a "sudden death" playoff with Ohio University. With a great drive from
Zach Sisson,
Peter Stickney was able to make the putt and win on the first hole of the playoff and earn a D1 bid to nationals in April.
The men's MC3 team comprised of André Spronk,
Ryan Zirilli, and
Xavier Wilson finished third in their section. Strong singles play from Spronk and Zirilli led the team.
On the women's side,
Emily Schweigart and
Carolyn Powers competed for the first time together in a collegiate tournament, finishing third, as well. Schweigart led the team during singles, with Powers just a few strokes behind.
"To my knowledge this is the first time we have won in a playoff to earn a D1 bid.," said head coach Ben Campbell. "The MC1 team showed incredible selflessness, and composure, fighting for each other and pushing through the mental battles on the course. Our MC3 team gained a lot of experience in a Collegiate tournament, which was our goal. Similarly, the women's team is progressing at a quick pace and will be looking to record a team best finish at nationals in the spring."
The 2026 Collegiate Disc Golf Championships will be held in Rock Hill, S.C., April 1-4.
