Women's Tennis Starts Season with Home Loss

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton women's tennis came up short in a 4-3 loss to Mt. Aloysius at the Kerr-Pegula Field House on Saturday.

The Highlanders were able to take one of two in the opening doubles matches, but the Mounties earned the point for winning at first and third. Clancey Cockle and Zoe Zachery earned the 6-2 win at doubles, with the tandems of Arija Grant and Sage Brinckerhoff (first) and Abigail Lloyd and Victoria Martinez (third) each losing close 4-6 decisions.

In singles play, the teams split the six matches. The Mounties won at first, fourth and sixth, while the Highlanders claimed wins from Brinckerhoff (second), Cockle (third) and Martinez (fifth). Grant played a marathon match at first singles, but after winning the first set, 6-1, she fell 4-6, 2-6 in the next two sets. Zachery pushed her opponent to the limit at fourth singles, losing 5-7, 5-7.

"I'm super proud of our team today. We battled hard and were in some really tight matches across the board," said Coach Matthew Webb. "Freshman Sage Brinckerhoff got her first collegiate win, and our seniors led well today. We are looking forward to getting back on the courts on Monday as we prepare for our next match."

The Highlanders return to action on Wednesday, September 10 at 5 p.m., when they host Fredonia State.
