HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton and Alfred produced an entertaining and competitive women's soccer matchup, but it was the visiting Saxons who came out with a 1-0 win on Saturday at Burke Field.

The teams went scoreless over the first 45 minutes with Houghton holding a 3-1 advantage in shots. The second half started with the visitors pressing the pace. Alfred would put four shots on the Houghton net over the first 14 minutes of the second half. Just one minute later, their fifth shot of the half -- and last one of the game -- would be the difference maker. The Saxons scored the game's lone goal in the 61st minute off a 20-yard free kick that curled around the Houghton wall and into the lower right corner of the net.

As the second half continued, Houghton would outshoot the Saxons, 9-0, but the equalizing goal never came.

Houghton finished with a 12-6 shots advantage. Alfred led in corners, 9-5.

Preslee Miller made one save and allowed the only goal. Grace Russell led the team with three shots.

Houghton travels to Brockport on Wednesday, October 1 for a 4 p.m. Empire 8 contest.
