HOUGHTON, NY – Despite leading by eight points late in the first set, the Houghton Highlanders could not hold back the Redeemer University College Royals, eventually falling in straight sets, 3-0.
The Highlanders held a commanding, 20-12, lead in the opening set, before their neighbors from the north reeled off nine of the next 10 points, tying the game, 21-21.
Houghton eventually gained set-point, 25-24, on a Redeemer attack error, but the Royals took the next three points to win the first set, 27-25.
After taking the second set handily, the Royals jumped out to a sizable lead in the third set, only to see the Highlanders come back, eventually taking the lead, 17-16 on a Redeemer attack error.
That, however, would be the last threat the Highlanders would pose, as the Royals would win nine of the final 12 points to take the set and the match.
