HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton women's tennis fell to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in E8 action after a 5-2 home loss to St. John Fisher on Tuesday.
The Highlanders won two of the three doubles matches to earn the first point of the match, but could only manage one win in singles play despite some competitive performances.
In doubles, the first tandem of
Arija Grant and
Sage Brinckerhoff played strong to a earn a 6-3 win and then Houghton got a gutsy 7-6 (7-2) victory from
Victoria Martinez and
Abigail Lloyd in the third pairing.
Brinckerhoff earned the only singles win for the Highlanders, a dominating 6-0, 6-0 performance in #2.
"I'm really proud of our effort this afternoon. We played a good team and battled hard to get the doubles point. Then in singles, St. John Fisher's talent showed," said Head Coach
Matthew Webb. "A real bright spot was freshman
Sage Brinckerhoff, being part of the winning first doubles team with
Arija Grant, and then taking second singles in decisive fashion. We are looking forward to our to Russell Sage this weekend for another E8 matchup."
Houghton travels to Albany to take on Sage for a 1 p.m. match on Saturday, September 20.
