The Houghton University track and field teams delivered a strong showing on Saturday at the Cardinal Classic, highlighted by multiple event wins, AARTFC qualifying marks, and a number of top-five finishes.
Relay Dominance
Houghton was particularly impressive in the relays, sweeping both 4x400 events:
Distance Standouts
The Highlanders excelled in distance events:
- Jenna Binney led the way with a third-place finish and AARTFC qualifying time in the 800m (2:19.57).
- In the 1500m, Emberlynn Nolt placed fourth (4:51.66), just shy of the qualifying standard.
- The women placed two in the top eight of the 5,000m, with Noelle Linenfelser (7th, 19:44.72) and Rachael Smith (8th, 19:44.89).
- On the men's side, Henry Sardina ran to a runner-up finish in the 1500m (4:02.59), while Amos Bixler (4th, 1:59.12) and Evan Geer (5th, 1:59.96) both broke two minutes in the 800m.
- Kurt Akins placed second in the 10,000m (34:27.19).
Sprints & Hurdles
- Kealon Knight led the men's sprinters with a fourth-place finish in the 100m (11.28), followed closely by Claveze Robinson in fifth (11.40).
- Tim Gordon added a top-10 finish in the 200m (23.27).
- In hurdles, Michael Solomon qualified for the 110m hurdle final and was among the top competitors in prelims, while Jacob Hinman took second in the 400m hurdles (1:01.28).
- On the women's side, Sophie Heilman placed eighth in the 400m hurdles (1:10.19).
Field Event Highlights
- Alexa Belanger tied for third in the high jump, clearing 1.55m.
- Ryan Sperl earned a third-place finish in the triple jump (13.21m).
- In the throws, Jenna Fischer posted strong performances across multiple events, including 10th in discus and sixth in javelin.
- Malachi Lewis led the men's throwers with a ninth-place finish in javelin (33.14m).
Additional Notables
- Mindy Yoder (400m), Risa Palmer (800m), and Ami Robbins (800m) all contributed solid mid-distance performances.
