Men's Tennis Claims 6-3 Win over Cardinals

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton men's tennis swept its two-match series with St. John Fisher, taking a 6-3 win over the Cardinals at the Kerr-Pegula Field House on Thursday.

The win earns the Highlanders a spot in the Empire 8 Tournament. They are currently 4-2 in conference play and ranked No. 3 in the West Division behind Nazareth and Oswego.

Against the Cardinals, Houghton went 2-1 in doubles play with victories going to Nolan Zach and Graham Cook in second doubles and Jason Murphy and Benjamin Unger in third doubles.

Singles wins were secured by Preston Tobolski (second), Cook (third), Samuel Garay (fourth) and Murphy (sixth).

Nolan Zach played a tough first singles match, losing 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, while Unger also lost in a three-set match, 6-2, 4-6, 6-7.

"Today was a big win for us. We knew it wasn't going to be easy and Fisher definitely made us earn every single point today," said Head Coach Jordan Crouch. "We have lots of great tennis to play and a lot we can still improve upon. We're all excited for a little bit of a break here for Easter to rest and recharge as we prepare for our final week of regular season tennis next week. Let's go Highlanders."

The Highlanders will look to move up in the E8 standings with key matches vs. Nazareth and Oswego next Friday and Saturday.
