HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton men's tennis moved its conference record to 3-2 with a 7-2 win over Alfred in E8 action Wednesday at the Kerr-Pegula Field House.
The win was the 17th straight for the Highlanders over the Saxons, dating back to the 2015-16 season.
Houghton got the match off strong with three doubles wins, including a gutsy 8-7 (7-2) victory for the third doubles pairing of
Graham Cook and
Isaac Anderson.
As they moved to singles play, the Highlanders continued to roll in the middle matches, with
Preston Tobolski (second),
Graham Cook (third),
Samuel Garay (fourth) and
Jason Murphy (fifth) losing just two total games across their eight sets.
Nolan Zach (first) and
Isaac Anderson (sixth) each took their opponents to third sets before losing 10-8 and 10-7, respectively, in the third-set tiebreakers.
"I was happy to have a bonus home match today. Thanks to our fans for all of the support. We felt that on the courts," said Head Coach
Jordan Crouch. "We started off strong in doubles and then carried that momentum into singles. The middle of our lineup was so dominant today. Great job Preston, Graham, Sam, and Jason. Those guys took care of business in singles and it was a big statement from them. We have a quick turnaround tomorrow to play St. John Fisher. Let's go Highlanders!"
Houghton takes to the courts again on Thursday when they host St. John Fisher at 1 p.m.
