HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton women's tennis got strong play across the roster vs. Alfred, however the Saxons were able to win the majority of the matchups to take a 6-1 win at Houghton on Wednesday.
Alfred earned the first point at doubles by taking two of the three pairings.
Sage Brinckerhoff and
Arija Grant won first doubles (6-4), while
Zoe Zachery and
Clancey Cockle (2-6) and
Abigail Lloyd and
Victoria Martinez (4-6) came up just short in second and third doubles, respectively.
The singles matches were just as competitive. Grant got the only win for the Highlanders (6-1, 6-1) in second singles, however, the majority of the other matches were back and forth, with two coming down to the wire in third-set tiebreakers. Martinez lost 5-7, 6-4, 7-10, and Lloyd kept it close in a 6-4, 0-6, 5-7 loss at sixth singles. Zachery at fifth singles took her opponent to a tiebreaker in the second set before losing, 2-6, 6-7. Brinckerhoff continued her strong freshman campaign, losing 4-6, 3-6 in first singles.
Houghton will travel to Nazareth on Saturday, October 11 at 1 p.m. to close out the regular season.
