HOUGHTON, NY – After winning the first set, the Houghton Highlanders could not hold back the SUNY Geneseo Knights, who won the next three in a row to defeat the Highlanders, 3-1.
Houghton looked primed to click in the opening set, leading throughout and staving off a short Geneseo run late, to take a 1-0 lead, 25-20.
But Geneseo bounced back to win the next two sets handily, as the Highlanders struggled with their passing game and failed to put together any type of attack, committing 16 attack errors over the middle two sets.
The final set looked like it would bring more Geneseo domination, after the Knights peeled off six straight points early, to take a 9-3 lead.
With the Knights leading, 14-5, Houghton slowly began to claw back into contention, winning six of the next seven points. But again, Geneseo would pull ahead, taking a 20-13 advantage.
Again, Houghton would create a five-point run to pull within two, 20-18. And while the Highlanders scrapped to the end, they could not climb out of the hole, falling, 25-21.
