HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton women's soccer kept its postseason hopes alive with a 3-0 win over SUNY Poly on Saturday at Burke Field.
The three-goal margin wasn't indicative of the dominance the Highlanders displayed on the afternoon. Houghton outshot the Wildcats, 49-3, putting 20 shots on goal. Shots were 28-2 in the first half and 21-1 over the final 45 minutes.
Karryne Mims opened the scoring in the 11th minute off an assist from
Jenika Krum.
Samara Hallett made it 2-0 with an unassisted tally just seconds before halftime. The second half featured just one goal, but it came with just five minutes remaining in the contest,
Emily Purgason scored off an assist from
Amelia Jones.
It was the first goal of the season for Hallett and the first assists for Krum and Jones.
The 49 shots were the most since Houghton joined the Empire 8 and was just one away from making the program's top-10 list. The school record for shots in a game is 79 vs. Hilbert in 1995.
Six players registered at least five shots, led by
Hope Russell with nine.
Elena Esh tallied six, with
Grace Russell, Purgason, Mims and
Aivery Shuck each totaling five.
Preslee Miller got the start, making one save in the first half.
Lucy Starzyk made one save over the final 45 minutes.
The win moved Houghton into the seventh spot in the E8 standings with three conference games to play. The top eight teams earn a tournament bid.
The Highlanders are back in action on Wednesday, October 22 when they travel to take on Geneseo at 4 p.m.
