ALBANY, NY – The Houghton Highlanders once again found a way to win, snatching victory for the jaws of defeat in a five-set thriller against the Russell Sage Gators, 3-2, to extend their winning streak to eight matches.
Trailing, 2-1, the Highlanders were primed to force a pivotal fifth set, as they led late in the fourth, 23-19. But Sage picked up three straight points and looked to finish the match in four.
A bad set by the Gators gave the Highlanders set point, and
Alexa Belanger finished off the Houghton win with a kill.
As was the case throughout the seesaw match, the fifth set did not disappoint. The teams traded points early until Sage pulled ahead, 13-10.
Belanger stepped up with a kill, then, following a Sage error, peeled off a pair of aces to give the Highlanders match point, and another Sage error gave Houghton the win.
