ONEONTA, NY – Only 16 hours removed from a hard-fought, five-set win over Russell Sage, the Houghton Highlanders saw their eight-game winning streak snapped by the Hartwick Hawks in straight sets where none of the sets was decided by more than three points.
After the Hawks narrowly pulled out the first set, 25-23, the second set brought more back-and-forth scoring. With the game knotted, 20-20, Hartwick ticked off four straight points to force set-point, thanks to a pair of kills and a service ace.
The Highlanders got back a pair to pull within striking distance, but a kill by Lucy Walker finished the set.
Once again, the final set played out much the same, as the teams traded points throughout the early-going, until Hartwick reeled off eight straight points to take a 15-10 lead. Houghton battled back, taking seven of the next 10 points to pull within one, 18-17.
From there the Hawks and Highlanders traded points, until, with Hartwick leading, 23-22, a kill by Shelby Swartz and a Houghton attack error finished off the match.
