BROCKPORT, NY – In a battle of two of the top teams in the Empire 8, the Brockport Golden Eagles capitalized on a third-quarter surge to take down the Houghton Highlanders and remain atop the conference women's basketball standings.
The Highlanders jumped out to a 19-16 lead in the first quarter, and after an even second, still led by three at the half, 38-35.
But the Golden Eagles turned the tables after the break, shooting 50 percent from the field and knocking down 3-of-4 shots from long range, while Houghton's offense went cold, hitting only 25 percent of their shots.
At the end of three, Brockport led, 55-50.
The Golden Eagles continued their offensive dominance into the fourth, building an 11-point lead with only 3:17 to play. But back-to-back threes by
Kayla Camacho and
Crysta LaCrosse, followed by a Camacho layup, put the Highlanders back within three.
That, however, was as close as Houghton would come, as they failed to score again, and the Golden Eagles hit three-of-four shots from the foul line to ice the victory.
