HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton women's tennis got points in every match to take a 9-0 win over Utica on Saturday at the Houghton Outdoor Courts.
The win snaps an 18-match losing streak, and it's the team's first conference win since defeating St. John Fisher on October 8, 2022.
Claiming victories for the Highlanders were the doubles tandems of
Arija Grant and
Alexandria Leary,
MyaKay Bartman and
Zoe Zachery, and
Kelsi Clapper and
Clancey Cockle.
Each of those players also secured straight-set victories in their singles matches.
"What an awesome day for a tennis match. Weather was perfect. Our energy was perfect. And most importantly, we went out and played the best match of the year and got to put up a big win against a conference opponent," said Head Coach
Jordan Crouch. "We talked about learning and growing from the disappointing loss against Oneonta and today demonstrated that we have done just that. I am so proud of the team and their effort all week in practice and particularly today. Coach Mark and Coach Jana deserve tons of credit for putting in the extra time and helping me be more eyes on the court. We are definitely going to enjoy this one but we are so much more excited for practice on Monday as we get ready for three great teams this upcoming week."
The team returns to action for another E8 tilt on Tuesday, September 17 when travel to take on the St. John Fisher Cardinals.
