GAME #1
Erik Charnetski's two-out bloop single to shallow centerfield broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring the only run of the game in a 1-0 Elmira victory.
The single ruined Houghton starter,
Ethan Cetton's, near perfect line. On the day, Cetton allowed only three hits while striking out 10 Soaring Eagles' batters.
A pair of Elmira pitchers, David Kruis and Kyle Tubbs, were just a notch better, allowing only two hits, while striking out eight without issuing a single walk.
GAME #2
Ty Kenney singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the 10
th inning, putting the Highlanders up for good, 5-4.
Elmira plated a pair of runs in the second and another in the third to take a commanding 3-0 lead. But in the top of the fifth, the Highlanders final cracked the scoreboard when
Christian Tortorici scored on a wild pitch, and
Chris VanCheri cranked a two-run double off the top of the fence in a left field, tying the game at three-apiece.
The Soaring Eagles reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, but
Jeremey Wilcox returned the favor in the top of the eighth with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch of his own. Despite having the bases loaded with one out following Wilcox's HBP, the Highlanders could not pull ahead.
After both teams sent three-up-and-three-down in the ninth, Tortorici drew a one-out walk in the top of the 10
th and promptly stole second base. As Tortorici attempted to steal third, Kenney ripped a line drive off the second baseman and into right field, scoring Tortorici with the go-ahead run.
Elmira would not go down without making things interesting. Xander Canfield drew a leadoff walk off Houghton closer
Jeremey Wilcox, and was replaced with a pinch runner. On the 1-2 delivery from Wilcox, the batter swung through strike three as the runner attempted to steal second. But the batter crossed over the plate with his follow-through, interfering with catcher
Chris VanCheri's throw, an automatic double play. Wilcox promptly closed out the game with his second strikeout of the inning for his fourth save of the season.
KEY STATS:
>> Since returning from Florida, Cetton's stat line has been impressive, posting a 1.62 ERA in 39 innings. During that stretch he has giving up 31 hits and struck out 47 batters.
>> VanCheri led the Highlanders offensively, going 4-for-8 on the day with a pair of doubles. He now leads the team with a .329 batting average.
>> Tortorici went 3-for-3 in game two, while Wilcox went 2-for-4. Kenney added a base hit in each game and two walks in the nightcap.
>> After walking three of the first four batters he faced,
Brett Rosario settled in to earn his third win of the year, tossing four innings of relief without allowing a hit. Following his initial wildness, Rosario did not issue another walk, but struck out six batters.
COACH'S CORNER:
"While it was tough to lose the first one after such an excellent performance by Ethan [Cetton], our guys competed all day long. I'm proud of the fact that, even though we've had some really rough games—like we did on Saturday—our guys are incredibly resilient. They bounce back when a lot of other teams would fold. That's pretty special.
"We threw strikes, played pretty good defense, and, at least in the second game, hit the ball a little.
"These were two exciting baseball games today. I give a lot of credit to Coach Goncalves for what he's building at Elmira. His guys battled all day, and thankfully, so did ours." - Head Coach
Brian Reitnour
