HOUGHTON, NY—After jumping out to an early lead, the Houghton Highlanders gave up six runs in the third inning and never recovered, losing the opening game of a three-game series to the St. John Fisher Cardinals, 10-3.
The Highlanders built an early 3-0 advantage, scoring a run in the first and two more in the second, but the wheels swiveled in the top of the third. A leadoff walk, a pair of defensive miscues, and another walk gave the Cardinals their first run.
A single by Brian Norsen scored two more before James Murphy deposited a homerun deep to left field, giving St. John Fisher a 6-3 lead.
Nate Tyler took the mound for the Highlanders in the fifth and kept the score, 6-3, until the eighth inning, when Norsen hit his sixth homerun of the year to left.
The Cardinals would tack on three more in the ninth, capping the scoring at 10-3.

COACH'S CORNER:
"We showed glimpses, but we need to be more consistent in order to beat good teams. When we gave them free bases, they capitalized.
"Nate [Tyler] gave us some real quality innings out of the pen, but we didn't make the offensive adjustments we needed to make after the first two innings, and we make too many defensive miscues.
"Our guys were competitive. We'll build on that tomorrow." – Head Coach
Brian Reitnour
