HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton men's tennis rode strong performances across all matches on Saturday, getting wins in all nine spots for a 9-0 win over St. John Fisher in Kerr-Pegula Field House.
The win marked the 40th straight regular season conference win for the Highlanders, who haven't lost in E8 play since a setback to Stevens on April 7, 2018.
"The focus for today was to come out strong in doubles, and remedy our slow start from yesterdays match. The team did just that," said Head Coach
Matthew Webb. "The mental focus was here today, and the guys performed."
Preston Tobolski, after getting out to a slow start in sixth singles, turned it around and found his groove to get through the first set 6-4 and then closed out the match with a 6-2 win in the second set. The middle of the line-up second through fifth closed out their matches in quick order today with dominating performances.Â
"I am proud of how the guys played today," said Webb. "We now will refocus for the second round of E8 play with key matches away at Nazareth and then at St. John Fisher next weekend."
The Highlanders battle the Golden Flyers and the Cardinals in back to back matches on Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20, respectively.
