HORSEHEADS, NY— The Elmira Soaring Eagles scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning and staved off a Houghton comeback attempt, defeating the Highlanders in the series opener, 15-7.
The Highlanders loaded the bases in the top of the first but failed to score, and the Soaring Eagles carried the momentum into the bottom of the inning. Elmira quickly loaded the bases without offering at a pitch, thanks to a leadoff walk and back-to-back hit-by-pitches. After Erik Charnetski snuck a ball inside the right field line, clearing the bases, the race was on, and Elmira did not stop until they had rapped out seven hits and plated 11 runs.
Houghton would scored six runs over the next three frames, cutting the Soaring Eagles' lead to 11-6 but Connor Stone's second homerun of the day put Elmira back up 12-6.
Elmira would tack on two insurance runs in the seventh, and another in the eighth, before Houghton closed out the scoring with a run in the top of the ninth.

COACH'S CORNER:
"Our guys showed a lot of resilience to battle the way they did after that first inning, but we can't put ourselves in holes like that and expect to win many games.
"Elmira did what they needed to do to win. They didn't move when pitches came inside, they worked out of jams, and when we threw the ball down the middle, they punished us for it.
"Our guys are capable of playing significantly better. We showed a lot glimpses after the first inning today, and all of us, including me, are anxious to get back onto the field on Monday." – Head Coach
Brian Reitnour
