HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton men's tennis took down the Alfred University Saxons on Friday afternoon in a decisive 9-0 victory at the Kerr-Pegula Field House.
The match started with what proved to be three hotly contested doubles matches before each Houghton pairing was able to finish strong with wins of 8-4, 8-4, and 8-5, respectively.
The team of
Tobias Webb and
Jason Murphy at third doubles again battled back from a deep hole for the come-back victory. Overall
Micah Schilke led the way with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 performance at first singles. Freshmen
Jonas Likens and
Preston Tobolski showed very well today with convincing wins at fifth and sixth singles.

"Today was a bit of a gritty match. Alfred came to play, and pushed us in doubles," said Head Coach
Matthew Webb. "To come out with a 3-0 lead was a testament to how we battled. With a bit of sickness and fatigue with a couple guys, it was a strategic win where the guys found ways to pull it out in some different ways today. Tomorrow won't be any easier with St. John Fisher coming to play. We will need to get our rest and get ready for a tough match tomorrow."
The Highlanders stay at home for Saturday's match when they host the Cardinals of St. John Fisher at 1 p.m.
