HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- After a month-long layoff, the Houghton men's tennis team got its first win of the season under their belts, with a 7-2 victory over Penn State Behrend on Saturday in the Kerr-Pegula Field House.
Despite the extended break, the men showed they were ready to play. The doubles line-ups proved to be very competitive, with the Highlanders taking both 1
st and 2
nd doubles in close matches. The top of the line-up led the way today by following up with a clean sweep in singles from 1
st through 4
th. Leading the way was
Nolan Zach at 3
rd singles with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win to then be followed up by
Micah Schilke at 1
st  (6-2, 6-2) and
Levi Webb at 2
nd (7-6, 6-4) and
Graham Cook at 4
th (6-2, 6-4).Â
The match concluded with
Jason Murphy taking 6
th singles at 6-4, 6-4 to mark his first collegiate victory. Â
Coach Webb said….  "The fight and grit they guys showed today bodes well for the rest of the spring. PSU Behrend is a good young team. Some things didn't go well today, but the guys figured out how to get a result. I am looking forward to the rest of the spring season."
The Highlanders return to action with an away match vs. Rochester Institute of Technology on Wednesday, March 20.
