Highlanders Stave Off Late Rally to Beat Fredonia

HOUGHTON, NY – Hannah Farley came off the bench to score a career-high 17 points, leading the Houghton Highlanders past the Fredonia State Blue Devils on Wednesday night, 72-57.

Fredonia gave the Highlanders all they could ask for in the opening quarter, matching Houghton stride-for-stride.  With the score knotted, 14-14, and only seconds left on the clock, Anna Dening missed a three-pointer, but Farley grabbed the offense board, scored the put-back, and drew a foul with .4 seconds remaining.  She would sink the and-one, giving the Highlanders a three-point lead.

The Blue Devils charged back in the second, taking a three-point lead at the midway point, until Lilly Bentley kicked off a 10-0 Houghton run with a layup.  The Highlanders would take an eight-point lead into the half.

Houghton built a double-digit lead in the third before watching the Blue Devils chip away, gradually, whittling the deficit to only three points with six minutes to play in the game.  But a three-pointer from the top of the key by Tabitha DeVries sparked another Highlanders run, putting the game out of reach.

COACH'S CORNER
"Tonight was an incredibly intense game.  I thought Fredonia played really hard the whole game.  I'm proud that we were able to match that energy for the full 40 minutes.

"There were times where we were a little undisciplined in what we do; but overall, we never gave up.  We made winning plays when it mattered the most.

"We have a quick turnaround before we come back and fine tune the details heading into the weekend!" – Head Coach Phil Pellegrino
