ALFRED, NY – The Houghton Highlanders dropped a pair of non-conference road matchups on Saturday afternoon, first falling to the University of Maine-Fort Kent Bengals, 3-0, before losing to the host Alfred State Pioneers, 3-1.
In the opening match, front row play proved the difference, as the Bengals outhit the Highlanders, 38 kills-to-17. Houghton committed 20 attack errors, while UMFK made only 11.
In the second match, Alfred State picked up the first two sets before the Highlanders battled back to take the third. In the fourth set, Houghton had match point, 27-26, but the Pioneers rallied to win the final three points, and the match.
