Men's Volleyball to Compete in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference

Houghton men's volleyball has been accepted into affiliate membership with the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference and will begin league play in 2024-25.

The Presidents Council of the AMCC approved the addition of Houghton and Buffalo State University this spring.

"We are excited to be joining the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference for men's volleyball," said Director of Athletics Matthew Webb. "This is an exciting time for Houghton athletics, and finding a good home for men's volleyball has been an important part of this process.  We are familiar with the membership of the AMCC as we regularly compete against them in many of our other sports, so this will simply be more of a formal relationship with the AMCC."

Both Buffalo State and Houghton will begin their first competitive seasons in the spring of 2024. Houghton currently has a 20-match schedule slated for the spring.

The AMCC will have 10 members that sponsor men's volleyball in 2024, which was established as a championship sport in 2019. Full-time members include Carlow University, Hilbert College, Penn State Altoona, Penn State Behrend, Mount Aloysius College, and Wells College. Other affiliate members are Geneva College, Hiram College, Saint Vincent College, and Thiel College.  The latter four will be leaving the AMCC after next season to compete in the Presidents Athletics Conference in 2025.

"Men's volleyball sponsorship continues to grow in Division III and the AMCC is excited to be fueling that expansion," said AMCC Commissioner Donna Ledwin. "The additions of Buffalo State and Houghton ensure that the league will remain strong and competitive for many years to come."

The AMCC receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.

The addition of men's volleyball brings Houghton's list of varsity sports to 17. In addition, the department offers two club sports, with plans to expand those offerings in coming years.

Houghton has a strong tradition of women's volleyball, and men's volleyball was an active club sport during the 1990s and early 2000s. Former Houghton women's volleyball standout Lindsay Seddon was named Houghton's first head coach in May.
