The Houghton Men's Tennis team picked up their first win of the season with a massive 9-0 sweep over Wilkes University. The Highlanders would dominate every area of the match with multiple big victories in singles and doubles. In doubles,
Levi Webb paired with
Jaimie Staerkle and
Micah Schilke with
Marcelo Garcia to win with identical 8-3 score lines at the first and second double flights respectively.
In singles play, Staerkle would lead the way at the first spot winning 6-3, 6-3. Garcia would roll to a 6-1, 6-0 victory, with
Nolan Zach right behind him at the third position coming out victorious 6-4, 6-0.
Graham Cook would bring the most exciting win of the afternoon taking the fourth position 6-4, 7-5 with some excellent aggressive play. To solidify the sweep,
Sam Bonisteel and
Adam Brown would finish out their matches 6-3, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1 at the fifth and sixth positions respectively.
"A physically dominating performance today from the guys," Coach
Zach Shilvock said post-match. "It was nice to see contributions from our entire lineup today, and I am excited for the next challenges we have on the schedule."
The Highlanders (1-2) will get right back into action Wednesday as they take on a strong Penn State Behrend team at home at 4:30pm.
