Strong Doubles Propels Men's Tennis over Penn State Behrend

The Houghton Men's Tennis team grabbed their second win of the season with a 7-2 victory over Penn State Behrend Wednesday afternoon. The victory was spearheaded by excellent doubles play early with the Highlander's seizing the 3-0 lead to start the match. Staerkle and Webb would continue their success with an 8-3 victory at first doubles. Following right behind them, Garcia and Schilke would come out victorious 8-2 at the second flight, and Cicero and Zach would keep the sheet clean with a perfect 8-0 score at third.
In singles play, Jaimie Staerkle added to his excellent start to the year winning in a third set 6-1, 1-6, 6-0. His victorious third set keeps him undefeated in matches that have gone this distance this year. Levi Webb would pick up another singles win at the third position 6-1, 6-2, Cicero at fifth 6-3, 6-0, and finally Nolan Zach would clinch the match with a steady 6-2, 6-4 win at sixth.

"Excellent start to the day with well-played doubles," Coach Zach Shilvock said post-match. "We train doubles a lot in order to gain that early edge and it showed here this afternoon. Today was a great team win, but there is still a lot of meat left on the bone when it comes to the quality we expect as a unit."

The Highlanders (2-2) will get right back into action tomorrow when they take on Division I opponent St. Bonaventure University down the road in Olean, NY.
