Brewster, Kurtz Break 60m Program Records at Houghton December Classic

HOUGHTON, NY – The Highlander track & field teams hosted the largest collegiate meet in KPFH history. The meet was comprised of 16 teams and 724 total athletes. It was the season opener for all teams competing. Freshman Tori Brewster was the standout for the women's team on the day, breaking the program record in the 60m dash in 7.85 seconds. She finished 3rd overall in the competition. The previous record was held by Amerrah Horne-Vaden in 7.89 seconds in 2022. Brewster was also just 11 centimeters off the program record in the long jump. Evan Kurtz, in similar fashion, broke the men's program record in the 60m dash. He flew to a time of 7.19, becoming the first Houghton man to run under 7.20 seconds. He breaks Malcolm Smith's record of 7.24 from 2022.

"I believe the term I heard a lot towards the end of the meet, from the team, was energy. There are a lot of people on our team right now who bring an incredible amount of competitive energy. Maybe the highest percentage of people since I've been here. They are completely bought in and excited to be together. This might sound simple, but it can't be overstated how important this is. I tip my cap especially to Tori and Evan for their program records, in our first meet of the season. If that's a sign of things to come, then we have a lot to look forward to from the team, as a whole," said Coach Hager after the meet.

The track & field teams will be in action again on 12/8 at Nazareth College.
